Should parents be able to opt their children out of LGBTQIA+ books in school? The First Amendment's Free Exercise clause takes center stage in this constitutional debate.

Parents have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to allow their children to 鈥渙pt out鈥 of classroom instruction involving LGBTQIA+ children鈥檚 books. At the heart of the case is a clash between religious freedom claims and the educational mission to expose students to diverse perspectives.

In this special event, UAF students step into the roles of attorneys to present mock oral arguments based on the real pleadings filed with the Supreme Court in Mahmoud v. Taylor. One side will argue that the parents鈥 rights under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment are being violated, while the other side will defend the school administration鈥檚 decision to include inclusive books as consistent with constitutional principles.

This interactive program gives attendees a window into how constitutional arguments are built and debated, and how the Supreme Court might weigh competing rights and interests. Whether you鈥檙e interested in law, education policy, or civil liberties, this event offers a rare chance to see students apply constitutional law to a timely and controversial issue. Come listen, learn, and engage with both sides of this important debate!

This event is sponsored by the UAF Department of Political Science and is free and open to the public.

RSVPs are appreciated but not required and a Zoom link is available upon request by emailing Assistant Professor Carol Gray.
