LAST WEEK: Idle | THIS WEEK: at NCAA Rifle Championships (March 9-10)
The Alaska Nanooks rifle team will head to Charleston, South Carolina, this week in search of the program鈥檚 11th national title. Two weeks ago, the NCAA announced that the Nanooks are one of eight teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Rifle National Championships that will take place this Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10, and is hosted by the Citadel.
MEN鈥橲 AND WOMEN鈥橲 NORDIC SKI

The Alaska Nanooks men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 Nordic ski teams stayed in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, last week after competing in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and NCAA West Regionals at the same location two weeks ago. After a week of adjusting to the altitude, Alaska will race a full men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 team for the second-straight year at the 2018 NCAA Skiing National Championships this Thursday, March 8, and Saturday, March 10.
HOCKEY | 11-22-3, 9-17-2-1 WCHA
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team closed-out the 2017-2018 season after falling victim to the No. 3 Minnesota State Mavericks in a best-of-three quarterfinals series in the 2018 WCHA playoffs. The Nanooks dropped Friday鈥檚 contest 8-2 before Saturday鈥檚 6-2 decision. Alaska says goodbye to five seniors: defenseman Zach Frye, defenseman Nick Hinz, forward Tayler Munson, forward Austin Vieth and defenseman Justin Woods.
Frye earns weekly/monthly honors
Last week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association named senior defenseman Zach Frye the WCHA鈥檚 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 25) before he was selected as the league鈥檚 Defensive Player of the Month for February on Thursday (March 1). Throughout the second month of 2018, Frye led all WCHA defensemen in goals (2), assists (7), goals per games played (0.38), assists per games played (0.88), points per games played (1.25) and plus (11). Furthermore, Frye led all NCAA Division I men鈥檚 ice hockey defensemen in shots on goal (36) and shots on goal per games played (4.50). He was named the WCHA鈥檚 Defensive Player of the Week on three occasions throughout February.
Women鈥檚 basketball鈥檚 Carpenter named All-GNAC honorable mention
Last Wednesday, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced that Alaska Nanooks women鈥檚 basketball鈥檚 sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter was named All-GNAC honorable mention. The Yakima, Washington, native was the only player to appear and start in each of Alaska鈥檚 26 games this season, and she led her teammates in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game (335 total). Carpenter averaged 3.4 boards per game and she also chipped in 31 assists, 27 steals and two blocks for the Nanooks this season. Furthermore, Carpenter scored double-digit figures in 21 of the team鈥檚 26 contests this season with her best night coming against Central Washington on Dec. 2, as she collected a career-high 32 points.
Two from men鈥檚 basketball named All-GNAC honorable mention
Last Tuesday, the GNAC released the junior guard Alex Baham and sophomore forward Michael Kluting were named to the All-GNAC team as honorable mentions. It is both Baham's and Kluting鈥檚 first conference honor of their careers, and they are the 12th and 13th players under seventh-year head coach Mick Durham to garner an all-conference selection. Baham appeared and started in each of Alaska鈥檚 26 games this season and most notably ranked third in the conference in three-point field goal percentage with a .458 (66-for-144). In his second year with the Nanooks, Kluting registered a team-best 10 double-doubles throughout the season.

Mark your calendars! The Alaska Nanooks and Lavelle's Taphouse partnered up for a fundraiser on Saturday, April 21. One dollar per every beer sold will go directly toward the Alaska Nanooks general scholarship fund, and there will be giveaways every hour. More details to come.

In January, the Alaska Nanooks announced that Nanook hockey's junior defenseman will miss the remainder of the 2017-2018 season to undergo chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer.
