Winter Shorts returns in November

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Student Drama Association will present Winter Shorts, an annual student-produced collection of one-act plays. The plays will be performed in the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre in the Fine Arts Complex.

Show dates and times are:


  • Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at 7:30 p.m.

  • Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.

  • Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23, at 7:30 p.m.

  • Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m.


Winter Shorts is composed of six one-act plays written by local playwrights in the Fairbanks area. Students in SDA direct the entire production, which is staged in the Salisbury's Lab Theatre.

The six comedies touch on current social topics and issues, and contain some intense dramatic themes. The plays range from 10-25 minutes, with a total program time of 100 minutes. All plays use varying degrees of explicit language and portray mild violence.

  • In 鈥淭he Light of My Life,鈥 by Sam Thompson and directed by Jared Olin, two people entertain themselves while the power is out at their house.

  • 鈥淯ndeclared Plastics,鈥 by Michael Schaeffer and directed by Darren Napoli, deals with a dark secret about a close relationship.

  • In 鈥淥ur Time is Up,鈥 by Jessica Reed and directed by Jared Olin, friends find evidence of a possible murder.

  • In 鈥淒uo,鈥 by Tom Moran and directed by Luke Williams, a demon plot might play to the advantage of a woman looking to get a raise.

  • 鈥淩oadkill Kitty,鈥 by Rachel Blackwell and directed by Darren Napoli, explores a couple's effort to fix their relationship by meeting at a cafe.

  • In "I, Phone," by Tom Moran and directed by Luke Williams, a woman tries to move on from her ex, but her phone seems to have a different plan.


Doors open half an hour before showtime. Admission is $5, cash only, at the door. Tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturdays, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The show is recommended for ages 13 and up.
