MSU鈥檚 Rader earns second national award for landmark book on 鈥榝ear of crime鈥

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥斘蘧∽试床杉 State Professor Nicole E. Rader is the 2025 recipient of the Robert Jerin Book Award for her influential 2023 publication 鈥淭eaching Fear: How We Learn to Fear Crime and Why It Matters.鈥
Presented by the Division of Victimology of the American Society of Criminology, the award recognizes a book that significantly advances knowledge and scholarship in the study of victims and victimization.
The Robert Jerin Book Award is among the division鈥檚 highest honors, recognizing outstanding contributions that deepen understanding of victimization and influence the direction of future scholarship. Rader鈥檚 work was selected for its rigorous research, broad relevance and its clear impact on both academic and public discussions of crime and fear.
Published by Temple University Press, 鈥淭eaching Fear鈥 examines how fear of crime is learned, reinforced by families, schools and media, and ultimately influences behavior, perceptions of safety and broader social outcomes.
Her book also earned the 2024 Distinguished Scholar Award from the Division of Feminist Criminology for its exemplary contribution to understanding how fear of crime is socially constructed and taught.
Rader, who serves as head of the Department of Sociology, said, 鈥淚 am honored that my book, 鈥楾eaching Fear,鈥 was selected for the 2025 Robert Jerin Book Award. This award is especially meaningful to me because my book was recognized by my peers and colleagues who study my subfield of victimology.鈥
